Two Are Better Than One, and Woe to Him Who Is Alone If He Falls – Part 1

The lecture reflects on the Biblical verse: “Two are better than one… and woe to him who is alone if he falls, for he has no one to raise him up.” It explains the importance of spiritual fellowship and holy gathering in human life. Pope Shenouda III explains that a person cannot live alone, because God said from the beginning: “It is not good that man should be alone.”
The lecture focuses on the fact that the presence of a righteous person beside someone helps and raises him if he falls, whether this person is a spiritual friend, a guide, a righteous spouse, a family member, or even the Church itself. The lecture presents many examples from the Holy Bible and the lives of the saints showing how people raised one another through love, wisdom, and guidance.
The lecture also confirms that not every companionship is beneficial, but one must carefully choose “the second who raises him up,” because bad companionship may lead a person to falling and destruction. Therefore, a person should be connected to wise and spiritual people who lead him to God.
It also explains that the Church is the congregation of believers in which every member supports the other, and that life inside the Church grants a person strength, comfort, and a feeling of not being alone. A person finds in the holy sacraments, spiritual books, lives of the saints, and means of grace, spiritual sources that support and raise him up.
The lecture points out that the believer is never alone, because the grace of God, the Holy Spirit, the angels, and the saints surround and support him continually. Even in times of distress and temptations, the believer can say: “Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.”
The lecture concludes by emphasizing the importance of love and righteous spiritual relationships, because the person who plants love and goodness finds people standing beside him in times of distress, while harsh loneliness tires the soul. Therefore, a person should always seek the fellowship of God, the Church, and spiritual people in his life.
