His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the sin of unfaithfulness as one of the most dangerous sins that wounds the heart of God and corrupts the relationship of a person with God and with people. He explains that a person often forgets God’s many blessings and continuous gifts, and responds to them with ingratitude and disobedience instead of thanksgiving and faithfulness.

Main Idea

The teaching focuses on the fact that unfaithfulness appears when a person forgets God’s mercies and His works with him, and then deviates from His way or uses the talents and gifts that God granted him in matters that do not glorify God. Therefore, sin in its essence expresses a person’s forgetting of God’s blessings and his lack of appreciation for them.

Biblical Examples of Unfaithfulness

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III reviewed many examples such as:

  • Adam, who received great gifts from God and then disobeyed Him.
  • The children of Israel, who enjoyed God’s salvation and miracles and then murmured and worshiped the golden calf.
  • Solomon the Wise, who received great wisdom and glory and then deviated in the latter part of his life.
  • Many who received talents and blessings but used them away from the will of God.

Faithfulness as a Spiritual Virtue

The teaching explains that faithfulness is a virtue connected with thanksgiving, love, and fidelity. The believing person always remembers God’s blessings and does not forget the mercies of the past, but responds to them with thanksgiving, obedience, and love.

Faithfulness Toward People

Faithfulness is not limited only to the relationship with God, but extends to:

  • Parents and appreciation of their labor.
  • Friends, teachers, and spiritual guides.
  • Everyone who has done good or offered a service to a person.

He confirms that the person who learns faithfulness toward visible people can be faithful toward the invisible God.

God’s Faithfulness Toward Humanity

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III highlights that God Himself is the perfect example of faithfulness. He does not forget any act of love or goodness, keeps His promises through generations, and remembers the faithfulness of His children and their acts of love toward Him.

The Spiritual Message

The teaching calls the believer to continually review his life, remember God’s blessings from the beginning of his life, offer constant thanksgiving to God, and never forget the goodness of God or the goodness of people, because the thankful and faithful heart is a heart close to God and enjoying a sound spiritual relationship with Him.

Conclusion

Unfaithfulness is forgetting the blessings of God and people, while faithfulness is remembering love and goodness and responding to them with thanksgiving and fidelity. Therefore, the believer should preserve gratitude, live in a spirit of thanksgiving, and always remember God’s works and mercies in his life.
