Spiritual Vigilance – Part 2

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the true meaning of spiritual vigilance, explaining that the intended meaning is not merely staying awake physically, but rather the wakefulness of the heart and spirit and the continual concern for the salvation of the soul. The vigilant person is the one who constantly watches his thoughts, feelings, and spiritual directions, and guards himself against everything that may separate him from God.
Spiritual Vigilance and Resisting the Enemy
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III emphasizes that the spiritual life is a continuous struggle, and that the believer needs to know the tricks and plans of the spiritual enemy and not underestimate the hidden wars that come gradually without being noticed. Therefore, one must remain constantly prepared and spiritually discerning.
Beware of Gradual Decline
He explains that the most dangerous falls are not only the sudden ones, but also the slow and unnoticed decline in prayer, spiritual reading, spiritual fervor, and commitment to a holy life. The vigilant person notices any weakness or change in his life from its beginning and treats it quickly.
Watching Internal Changes
He calls for continual self-examination and for monitoring every change in thought, behavior, feelings, or outlook toward spiritual and worldly matters, while searching for the deep causes behind these changes and not dealing with them carelessly.
Caution Toward New and Hasty Ideas
He warns against rushing after any new idea without examination, discernment, prayer, and counsel, because the enemy may use haste to lead a person into mistakes or spiritual deviations.
Continuous Spiritual Growth
Spiritual vigilance is not limited to avoiding sin, but also includes following up spiritual growth, love for God, and progress in the spiritual life, without being satisfied merely with avoiding evil.
Benefiting from Reproof and Guidance
He encourages accepting advice, guidance, and even constructive criticism, because God may use others to awaken a person from negligence and reveal his faults and weaknesses so that he may return to the right path.
Not Surrendering After a Fall
He stresses that despair is one of the most dangerous tricks of Satan. Therefore, if a person falls, he should rise quickly through repentance and not allow the enemy to turn a temporary fall into complete spiritual collapse.
General Spiritual Message
The lecture calls for a life of continual spiritual wakefulness, constant self-examination, adherence to spiritual means of grace, caution toward the enemy’s tricks, and steadfastness in hope, repentance, and continuous growth in the love of God.
