Reflections During “Kyrie Eleison”

  • Question:
What do you think about during the prayer of Kyrie Eleison 41 times?
  • Answer:
I do not want to confine yourself to specific reflections; let yourself be free to contemplate freely as the Spirit guides it, and according to its state at the time of prayer. However, there is no objection to presenting some reflections.

† Some present their sins before God one by one, and with each of them say: “Lord have mercy,” asking to be rid of them and asking for forgiveness.
† Some place before themselves the sufferings of Christ: the scourging, the thorns, and the nails, while saying: “Lord have mercy,” apologizing for these sufferings which the Lord bore because of him.
† Some present their distresses and problems before God, asking for mercy.
† Some make these requests on behalf of others, and for the sake of the Church. And some present all their requests in contrition before God.

Reading the Gospel and Standing

  • Question:
Why do we stand during the reading of the Gospel in the church, while we read the Gospel at home sitting?
  • Answer:
There is a difference between the reading of worship, which requires standing, and the reading of study, which allows sitting.

† The reading of the Gospel in the church is part of worship and prayer, and it is also in the Agpeya a part of prayer whether at home or in the church, and it requires standing.
† The deacon in the church cries out saying: “Stand in the fear of God and listen to the Holy Gospel.” The Word of God we hear with reverence.
Whenever we read the Scripture with reverence, according to our reverence we benefit spiritually. There are those who read the Scripture in their homes while standing, then sit for meditation.
In the Scripture, God speaks to us, and we stand listening to Him.
