Following the Lord Jesus Christ During Holy Week

Lecture Summary
The lecture speaks about the meaning of “going outside the camp” during Holy Week, and how the Church follows the Lord Jesus Christ step by step in His sufferings and crucifixion. Pope Shenouda III explains that the camp symbolizes the dwelling place of God with His people, meaning the place of holiness and divine fellowship. Therefore, the sinner was cast outside the camp so that it would remain holy.
He explains that this principle began from the fall of Satan, then Adam and Eve after their expulsion from Paradise, and Cain after his sin. All of this shows that sin separates الإنسان from God and from the assembly of the saints. He also connects this concept with the teaching of the early Church, which preserved the holiness of the believing community and separated evil and sin from it.
Then he explains that the Lord Jesus Christ, although He is the Holy One without sin, accepted to be taken outside the camp and counted among the wicked in order to carry the shame and sins of humanity. He took the condition of fallen mankind so that He might give us the fellowship of glory, holiness, and entrance into the Heavenly Jerusalem.
The lecture also confirms that Christ’s going outside the camp became the way of salvation for humanity, because He paid the price of divine justice and opened the gates of Paradise. Therefore, during Holy Week, believers participate in Christ’s sufferings through repentance and contrition, remembering that all He endured was on their behalf and for their salvation.
The lecture also explains the Church rituals during Holy Week, such as moving away from the sanctuary, closing the door of the Holy of Holies, and wearing black garments, considering them spiritual expressions of sorrow and meditation on the sufferings of the Lord Jesus Christ.
In the end, the lecture calls every believer to contemplate the great love of Christ, who endured shame, crucifixion, and death in order to transfer humanity from outside the camp into the presence of God and His eternal glory.
