Those Who Have No One to Remember Them

Thus prays the priest in the Absolution of Midnight Prayer:
“Remember, O Lord, the helpless, the fallen, and those who have no one to remember them. Remember them, O Lord, together with us…”
So who are those who have no one to remember them?

  • Those who live in hamlets, alleys, narrow lanes, distant neighborhoods, and unknown random areas—places a priest rarely visits… and no one checks on them!
  • Foundlings and street children, whom some hire to be their assistants in theft and fraud, and who practice such things professionally.
  • Those suffering from dangerous contagious diseases, whom some fear to approach.
  • Those deprived of affection, ashamed to speak of their deprivation, yet longing for it.
All these need us to remember them—before the devil remembers them, throwing some into despair or ruin.
  • Also the fallen and the rejected, those of bad reputation, the frequenters of places of entertainment, and ex-prisoners—people who need to begin a new life, in repentance, and in a way different from before.
  • Those bound by the bonds of the devil, captive to sin, those whose falls make them feel there is no rising afterward, and those who want to break free from their chains but cannot…
  • The needy, the hidden families ashamed to reveal their need, and the indebted who are exposed to imprisonment because they cannot repay their heavy debts.
  • The truly oppressed—whom no one believes to be oppressed!
  • Those who have departed this present world, whom we have forgotten, and no one remembers them anymore.
  • The great wealthy people and those in high positions, whom no one remembers as needing spiritual care—likewise servants and spiritual leaders who may be in need of repentance, and no one remembers that.
  • Those in bitter afflictions unknown even to their loved ones, needing help and comfort.
  • Those who left ministry and became forgotten.
  • The mentally impaired, those considered unworthy.
  • Those who have no one on earth to remember them—God remembers them with His abundant mercies.
For He is the help of the helpless and the hope of the hopeless.
  • And all these are the work of the Church, which must not neglect any of her children.
  • These the priest remembers every night before God, who knows their condition well.
  • The priest who cares about visiting everyone in his flock must care about all these, knowing them and their needs.
