General Message of the Lecture

This lecture explains that feasts in the Coptic Orthodox faith are not merely formal or social occasions, but spiritual seasons established by God for humanity’s joy, salvation, and sacred rest. True joy in feasts is spiritual joy, rooted in salvation, repentance, and communion with God, not merely bodily rest or outward appearances.

Lecture Summary

  1. Feasts as a Divine Institution
Feasts are divinely ordained, as stated in the Holy Scriptures, intended for humanity to experience holy joy and sacred rest according to God’s will.
  2. Spiritual Joy as the Essence of the Feast
The joy God desires in feasts is joy in the Lord and in salvation, not material joy related to food or entertainment. Therefore, a true feast can exist even during fasting days.
  3. The Lord’s Day (Sunday)
Sunday is the Lord’s Day, the day of Resurrection, salvation, and spiritual rest. It is a complete feast that unites repentance, communion, joy, and sacred rest.
  4. The Feast of Pascha and Salvation
Pascha represents salvation through the blood of Christ and the passage from death to life. It is a continual invitation for believers to live in the joy of salvation.
  5. The Meaning of Biblical Feasts
Each feast carries a symbol and meaning:
  • Unleavened bread represents righteousness and purity of life.
  • The Feast of Tabernacles represents sojourn and detachment from the world.
  • The Lordly feasts proclaim God’s saving work in humanity.
  1. Christian Feasts
In the Nativity Feast, we celebrate God’s descent to us and the beginning of reconciliation. In the Epiphany, we learn humility and obedience. In the Resurrection, we rejoice in eternal life and victory over death.
  2. The Virgin Mary and the Saints
Feasts related to the Virgin Mary and the saints invite us to imitate their humility, obedience, and faith, not merely to honor them outwardly.
  3. The Feast as a Way of Life
The spirituality of the feast is not limited to a single day, but extends into one’s conduct, transforming the feast into a lived spiritual experience.
