The Institute of Pastoral Care

This institute is essential for the Church in order to deepen the pastoral meaning and the responsibility of pastoral care in the minds and hearts of the graduates of the Theological Seminary, and of the fathers, the priests in general. Its curriculum has been prepared for this purpose.

Teaching in the institute is carried out by a group of the distinguished hierarchs of the Church, the revered fathers, the priests, professors of the Theological Seminary and its branches, and professors of education, sociology, and psychology in our Egyptian universities who are servants of the Church.

The Institute of Pastoral Care is one of the branches of the Bishopric of Theological Institutes and Christian Education. It is headed by His Holiness the Pope, who also teaches there.

Graduates of the Theological Seminary and the fathers, the priests are admitted to the institute. Those fathers, the priests who are not graduates of the Seminary are required to pass an examination during the first year in theological subjects according to curricula determined for them by the institute. The institute also permits enrollment by correspondence for the fathers, the priests who serve in distant dioceses.

As for the professors and the courses of study:

  • His Holiness the Pope teaches the subject of the priestly ministry and matters related to it in the canons of the Church.
  • His Grace Anba Pakhomious teaches the subject of Church Administration. This subject includes the financial system of the churches, church membership, and the introduction of technology into church administration.

His Grace Anba Markos, Bishop of Shoubra El-Kheima, participates in teaching this last section.

  • His Grace Anba Bishoy teaches the subject of ecumenical relations among the churches.
  • His Grace Anba Benjamin teaches the subject of liturgical rites.
  • His Grace Anba Antonious Markos, General Bishop for African Affairs, teaches the subject of evangelism, especially in Africa, assisted by His Grace Anba Thomas.
  • His Grace Anba Paula teaches the subject of personal status, the marital disputes related to it, and the fundamental elements upon which the family is built.

He is assisted in teaching this subject by Hegumen Dawoud Tadros, a member of the Clerical Council and one of the graduates of this institute in the 1970s.

  • His Grace Anba Moussa, Bishop of Youth, teaches the subject of youth and matters related to the ministry of emigrants and female emigrants.
  • His Grace Anba Serapion teaches the subject of development and social service.
  • Together with His Grace Anba Moussa, he also teaches matters related to medical issues such as family planning, the treatment of addiction, matters concerning organ transplantation, abortion, AIDS, and similar subjects.
  • Hegumen Salib Sourial teaches the subject of canon law, assisted by Father Sourial Fahmy.
  • Hegumen Tadros Yacoub Malaty teaches the subject of the Church Fathers and their relationship to pastoral care.
  • His Grace Anba Pakhomious teaches the subject of rural ministry and ministry in poor urban neighborhoods, assisted by Archdeacon Ramses Naguib.
  • Professor Dr. Nabil Sobhy teaches the subject of “Ministry to Special Groups.” This subject includes ministry to people with disabilities, prisoners, delinquent girls, those suffering from incurable diseases, and similar groups.
  • Professor Dr. Tharwat Ishak teaches the subject of the problems of contemporary society and ways of dealing with them.
  • Professor Dr. Rasmy Abdel Malek teaches psychology and education.
  • Professor Dr. Nabil Sobhy supervises the teaching of research methodology.

It is a comprehensive curriculum embracing various ecclesiastical, educational, medical, and social fields, taught by a carefully selected group of professors.

Applications are now being accepted at the Theological Seminary at its headquarters in the Anba Rouis district.

The institute will be inaugurated on the occasion of the centennial celebration of the reestablishment of the Theological Seminary. Classes at the institute are held in the evening.

In the subject of the priestly ministry, His Holiness the Pope will invite some experienced fathers, the priests to present some of their practical experiences in the field of pastoral care.

We all pray that this institute may enjoy every success in the service of the Church.
