The Holy Spirit and His Work in Man

This teaching addresses the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Christian, explaining that true spiritual life is based on fellowship with the Holy Spirit and not on human effort alone. A spiritual person is one who walks according to the Spirit rather than according to the flesh and allows the Spirit of God to work within him, with him, and through him. His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that the Holy Spirit has been working in humanity since the beginning of creation and is the source of divine guidance, teaching, and revelation. The Holy Spirit is also able to renew the soul regardless of its condition and grant it light and spiritual life.
Spiritual Message
The teaching emphasizes the importance of abiding in the Holy Spirit and asking for His work to continue in our lives through prayer, repentance, and closeness to God. The Holy Spirit is the One who convicts a person of sin and guides him to the truth, whereas the conscience may err or become distorted if it is not enlightened by God’s grace. The teaching explains that the Holy Spirit grants a person spiritual strength that helps him overcome sin, desires, and wrong habits. It also affirms that the work of the Holy Spirit becomes evident through clear spiritual fruits, such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Educational Lesson
The teaching explains that the fruits of the Holy Spirit are more important than being preoccupied with spiritual gifts and outward appearances, because God cares about what changes within a person and the extent of his growth in love and virtue. A person who lives in true fellowship with the Holy Spirit demonstrates gentleness, kindness, and peace in his life rather than anger, violence, and impulsiveness. It also explains that the Holy Spirit works in the holy sacraments of the Church, such as Baptism, Chrismation, the Eucharist, Priesthood, Marriage, and the Unction of the Sick. It further affirms that the Holy Spirit is not limited to the New Testament but is the eternal Spirit of God who worked in the prophets and saints since the Old Testament.
Practical Application
This teaching invites us to examine our relationship with the Holy Spirit and ask whether our actions and words reflect God’s work within us or merely our own will. We should ask God to establish His Holy Spirit within us and fill our hearts with love, peace, gentleness, and joy. We must also strive to bear the fruits of the Holy Spirit in our daily interactions and allow Him to transform our thoughts, will, and behavior. It is also important to pray, asking God to guard our mouths against wrong speech and make our words a source of edification and praise. The more firmly we abide in the Holy Spirit, the more spiritual strength grows within us, helping us live a life of holiness and bear witness to Christ.
