The Fear of God – Part 1

Main Idea
This lecture explains that the fear of God is the foundation of a sound spiritual life, and it does not contradict the love of God but leads to it. Fear here is not terror, but reverence, respect, and honor that drive a person to keep God’s commandments and walk in righteousness.
Relationship Between Love and Fear
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III confirms that a person cannot reach true love without beginning with the fear of God. Fear is the beginning of wisdom and the path leading to God’s love, while perfect love does not cancel fear but elevates it into holy reverence.
Danger of Misunderstanding God’s Love
The teaching warns against using God’s love as an excuse for carelessness or neglect of commandments, because this leads to losing the fear of God from the heart. True love is inseparable from obedience; whoever loves God keeps His commandments.
Fear of God in Scripture and Church
Fear is not only in the Old Testament, but it is clearly present in the New Testament and in the Church prayers. The Church teaches her children to live in the fear of God through prayers and rituals, such as standing with reverence and listening to the Gospel with awe.
Meaning of True Fear
The fear of God does not mean terrifying fear, but honoring and respecting God, and sensing His presence and majesty. This fear leads a person to obedience, avoiding sin, and living a life of repentance.
Fruits of the Fear of God
The fear of God produces in a person:
- repentance and return to God
- humility and contrition
- carefulness and precision in spiritual life
- reverence and tears in prayer
- discipline and spiritual order
Examples from the Saints
The lives of the saints show that the fear of God remained in their hearts even at the highest levels of holiness, proving that it is a lasting virtue that deepens with spiritual growth.
Ways to Acquire the Fear of God
A person can train himself in the fear of God through:
- respecting the church and the sanctuary
- honoring the Holy Bible
- praying with reverence and focus
- التعامل مع الأمور المقدسة بوقار
- avoiding carelessness in worship
Spiritual Conclusion
The fear of God is a bridge that leads a person to true love of God. Whoever lives in fear keeps the commandments, and whoever keeps the commandments enters into the depth of love, living a holy life without carelessness but with true spiritual reverence.
