Hymns Set to the Tunes of Popular Songs

Hymns Set to the Tunes of Popular Songs
Question:
What is your opinion of hymns that are set to the melodies of popular songs?
Answer:
Those who do this are concerned only with the meaning of the words, while overlooking the effect of music on the human soul. Music instills certain feelings within a person. A piece of instrumental music, even without words, can make a person joyful, sorrowful, enthusiastic, excited, or even awaken certain desires. Therefore, we should never ignore the influence of music on the soul.
A hymn is a spiritual song, and its music should be spiritual, with sacred melodies. It is not appropriate to combine it with a tune that may evoke feelings other than the holy spiritual sentiments intended by the hymn.
Furthermore, such a melody may remind the singer of the popular song and its lyrics, causing the mind or heart to wander, or causing emotions to become mixed with memories associated with that song.
Let us remember, brethren, the words of the Apostle: “And what communion has light with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14).
