The Continuation of the Spirit of Engagement

In the past issues, we spoke about marriage, the harmony of the spouses and the difference between their ages, and about engagement. Today we speak about the continuation of the spirit of engagement…

The Continuation of the Spirit of Engagement

During the period of engagement, the fiancé is more gentle and affectionate, more considerate of his fiancée’s feelings, and more eager to please her…

Why should this spirit not continue after marriage as well?!

We often see husbands who, after marriage, decrease in their respect for their wives, decrease in their attentiveness, and decrease in their courtesies. Their wives no longer see in them the former refined treatment, filled with love, compassion, tenderness, and a desire to please.

Many husbands worsen in their treatment under the pretext of removing formality…

In the name of removing formality, he does not say a word of thanks to his wife, nor an expression of permission, nor a word of praise. He may joke with her in heavy humor, and may at times allow himself sarcasm. He may also permit himself harsh rebuke and a severe manner…!!

Why does a man not live in marriage with the same spirit as in engagement?

Likewise, why does the wife not continue as she was during her engagement?

During engagement she was obedient and calm, always appearing gentle, avoiding a loud voice, anger, and quarrels, desiring to preserve the man and his love… Would that in marriage she would continue in the same spirit…
