The Church and Salvation

The lecture explains that the Church is the means entrusted by the Lord Jesus Christ to the world so that people may receive salvation. It is the Church that preserves and transmits the faith and offers the holy sacraments through which a person abides in Christ.
First: The Service of the Word and Teaching
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that the Church begins its work through the service of the Word and discipleship, as it teaches people the true faith and leads them to the knowledge of God. Faith does not come to a person by himself, but through preaching and spiritual teaching within the Church.
Second: The Holy Sacraments and Salvation
The lecture confirms that the holy sacraments are necessary for salvation, foremost among them baptism which grants the second birth, forgiveness of sins, and union with Christ. Also, the sacrament of Myron grants the work of the Holy Spirit, and the sacrament of repentance restores a person to the life of reconciliation with God.
Third: Abiding in Christ
The lecture points out that a person abides in Christ through partaking of His Body and Blood, because the Church is the one that gives the heavenly bread and the continuous spiritual life to believers. Without this union, a person cannot live the complete spiritual life.
Fourth: The Legitimacy of Church Service
The lecture explains that true ministry must be sent by the Church and carry its authority and blessing, just as happened with the apostles and their successors through the succession of laying on of hands from generation to generation. The Church preserves the true teaching and the lawful ministry established by Christ.
Fifth: The Church as the Body of Christ
The lecture confirms that the believer becomes a member in the Body of Christ through the Church, and that separation from it is like a branch separated from the vine that dries up and loses life. The Church is the communion of saints and the one body whose head is Christ.
The Spiritual Message of the Lecture
The main message is that salvation is not an idea separated from the Church, but that the Church is the house of salvation and the place of divine grace. Through it, a person receives faith, the sacraments, teaching, reconciliation, and abiding in Christ, and lives within His holy body in a sacred spiritual fellowship.
