Spiritual Vigilance, Part 2

Main Idea
The lecture discusses the subject of spiritual vigilance, explaining that a person may become unaware of the salvation of his soul and may need something to awaken him from this spiritual sleep. It explains that God uses various means to bring a person back to himself and to the path of repentance and salvation. One of the most important of these means is the love of God, which can cause a person to feel ashamed of being distant from God when he sees His compassion and goodness toward him. Zacchaeus the tax collector is presented as an example of a person who changed when he experienced Christ’s love and personal care, so he abandoned his former life, confessed his sin, and restored what he had taken from others.
Spiritual Message
The lecture also explains that some people do not respond easily to love, so God may allow other means to awaken them, such as rejection, failure, or affliction. It presents examples from the lives of Mary of Egypt and Martha, where the experience of rejection became a reason for awakening, repentance, and returning to God. It also explains that repeated failure may lead a person to examine his life and search for the reason behind his distance from God instead of turning to magic and charlatans. The story of the Prodigal Son shows that affliction can awaken a person when he loses what he had depended upon, causing him to remember his father’s house and return to it.
Educational Lesson
The lecture also presents illness, afflictions, death, and the gloating of enemies as circumstances that can awaken a person, while emphasizing that their purpose is for the person to examine himself and return to God. It gives the story of Saint Jacob the Struggler as an example of how suffering and spiritual confrontation can reveal a person’s sin and lead him to deep repentance. The lecture particularly emphasizes the role of the saints, their prayers, and their tears in saving souls and awakening them, as seen in the stories of Baisa and Thaïs. It explains that the love of the saints for sinners is manifested in their prayers, their concern for their salvation, and their efforts to bring them back to the path of repentance.
Practical Application
The lecture calls the person not to wait for afflictions or blows before becoming spiritually awake, but to examine himself now and return to God willingly. It also encourages him to remember his former days with God and the sacred memories that can awaken his heart and reveal the difference between his life with God and his life in sin. The final message is that salvation is near for whoever desires to return to God with all his heart, and that God is able to transform a person and restore His divine image in him. Therefore, the person should place his will, heart, weakness, and corruption in God’s hands, trusting in His grace and love, so that God’s glory may dwell in his life once again.
