Pope Shenouda III discusses spiritual lukewarmness, explaining that it has different degrees and varies from one person to another. It may sometimes be a temporary and natural condition resulting from the changing circumstances of spiritual life. However, it becomes dangerous when lukewarmness turns into a person’s normal and permanent state.

He encourages everyone to examine themselves: Is lukewarmness the usual condition, with spiritual fervor occurring only occasionally, or is spiritual fervor the foundation, with lukewarmness being temporary? Does spiritual weakness come from external spiritual struggles or from internal negligence and laziness?

The Main Causes of Spiritual Lukewarmness:

  1. Neglecting a Life of Repentance: Repentance keeps the heart humble, broken, and conscious of its need for God. Moving away from repentance gradually weakens spiritual fervor.
  2. Neglecting Spiritual Practices: Staying away from church, prayer, Psalms, meditation, spiritual reading, and meetings can lead to spiritual weakness. These practices may also lose their impact through excessive familiarity.
  3. Formalism and Routine in Worship: Prayer becomes routine when it consists merely of repeating words or completing a certain number of Psalms without understanding, depth, reverence, or love for God. Quality and understanding are more important than quantity.
  4. Failure to Renew Spiritual Life: Following the same pattern of prayer and reading without reflection may lead to routine. Spiritual renewal requires meditation, renewed reading, and personal prayers from the heart.
  5. Pride and Self-Reliance: When a person becomes proud of spiritual achievements, God may allow that person to experience weakness in order to learn humility and recognize their dependence on divine grace.
  6. Pursuing Goals Other Than God: Seeking praise, recognition, admiration, or people’s approval can replace genuine love for God as the motivation behind spiritual actions.
  7. Becoming Overwhelmed by Service and Responsibilities: A person may become so occupied with ministry, administration, and correcting others that service itself becomes the main goal, while personal communion with God is neglected. This is illustrated by the elder son in the Parable of the Prodigal Son.
  8. Stopping Spiritual Growth: Being satisfied with one’s current spiritual level can lead to regression. Continuous growth in love, knowledge, and closeness to God is essential.
  9. Focusing on Worship While Neglecting Purity of Heart: Spirituality is more than prayers, Psalms, and hymns. It also involves inner purity and growth in the virtues and the fruits of the Holy Spirit, such as peace, joy, faith, gentleness, and calmness.
  10. Allowing Sin to Enter the Heart: Sin occupies the heart and takes the place of love and attention toward God, causing a person to lose their first love.
  11. Not Giving Repentance Sufficient Time: Moving too quickly from repentance and humility to spiritual joy without benefiting from discipline and self-examination can weaken the depth of repentance.
  12. Laziness and Love of Comfort: Loving relaxation and avoiding spiritual effort gradually diminish spiritual fervor.

Ways to Overcome Spiritual Lukewarmness:

  • Return to a consistent life of repentance.
  • Renew your relationship with God through prayer, reading, and meditation.
  • Avoid formalistic worship and seek depth in prayer.
  • Set aside time for sincere personal conversation with God.
  • Stop making people’s approval and praise the goal of spiritual life.
  • Continue growing spiritually instead of becoming satisfied with past achievements.
  • Give equal attention to inner purity and spiritual virtues.
  • Read the lives of the saints to discover higher spiritual examples.
  • Practice humility and recognize your constant need for God’s grace.
  • Resist laziness and excessive love of comfort.

Central Message:

Spiritual lukewarmness is not overcome simply by increasing the number of prayers or religious practices. True spiritual renewal comes through sincere love for God, genuine repentance, purity of heart, and continuous spiritual growth.
