the persecutions that our Syrian Orthodox brothers in the Church of Antioch suffered, and the biography of patriarchs and fathers affected by these events.

Life of Saint Severus the Antiochian

The speaker highlights the life of Saint Severus the Antiochian and his role as a patriarch resisting the Chalcedonian decisions, and how he lived in seclusion in Egypt between 518 and 538 AD preserving the faith with writings and letters supporting his brethren.

Forms of Persecution

The talk explains that persecution took many forms: exile and torture, seizure of churches, replacing Orthodox patriarchs with patriarchs loyal to the civil power (the Melkites), in addition to consecrating bishops by illicit means and violent measures to erase Orthodox leadership.

Resistance of the People and the Fathers

The text stresses the heroism of the people and fathers in preserving the faith — secret ways of worship, hidden pastoral care, and the steadfastness of fathers like Severus who sent letters of confirmation and continued preaching despite exiles and imprisonment.

Role of Political Events

The talk clarifies the imperial and Constantinopolitan political intervention in councils and their shaping of outcomes, and mentions movements such as Jacob Baradaeus’s actions and practices of consecrating hundreds of bishops disguised as laborers to enforce Chalcedonian control.

Historical Results and Aftermath

This led to schism and severe persecution at times, with some periods of calm under believing emperors, then renewed conflict and later shifts in balances historically (and subsequently opportunities for theological dialogue and agreements in the modern era).

Spiritual Conclusion

The spiritual message is a call to steadfastness in faith and wisdom in facing political pressures, acknowledging that the Church preserves its spiritual heritage through the fathers’ heroism and the people’s patience, with hope for reconciliation and dialogue without erasing history or denying truth.
