In this seminar, His Holiness Pope Shenouda III addressed the issue of literacy and adult education as both a national and spiritual concern. He emphasized that literacy is not an end in itself but a means to knowledge, and knowledge itself is a path to enlightenment and human growth.

1. Literacy as a Means, Not an End:
   The goal is not merely learning to read and write, but to use knowledge to elevate thought, behavior, and moral awareness, leading to a more fruitful and enlightened life.

2. Expanded Meaning of Illiteracy:
   Illiteracy today extends beyond reading and writing—it includes technological ignorance and linguistic detachment, especially among emigrants who have lost their connection to their mother tongue.

3. Spiritual and Intellectual Illiteracy:
   His Holiness described spiritual ignorance as darkness: those who live without knowing God or virtue are “illiterate in spirit” even if highly educated. True knowledge begins with knowing God and goodness.

4. Science in the Light of Faith:
   True science does not distance man from God. Knowledge that leads to pride or disbelief is misguided. The Pope called for humble learning and lifelong discipleship.

5. The Church’s Role:
   The Coptic Church, through the Bishopric of Public Services and the Bishopric of Youth, plays an active role in literacy programs, teaching over 833 illiterate adults and collaborating with the National Literacy Organization.

6. Literacy and Development:
   His Holiness linked literacy with economic and social progress, explaining that an educated worker contributes more productively and becomes less vulnerable to manipulation and superstition.

7. Women and Education:
   He honored women’s role in education, recalling Pope Cyril IV, the pioneer who established the first schools for girls in Egypt, and affirming that educated women enrich society’s moral and intellectual life.

8. Knowledge and Virtue:
   The Pope concluded that knowledge is valuable only when it leads to virtue and righteousness, quoting Scripture:
   “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God.”
