From the Decisions of the Holy Synod

  • The Holy Synod issued a decision recognizing the Monastery of Saint Demiana for Nuns at the Wilderness of Belqas during its session on Tuesday, February 20, 1979, after His Holiness the Pope, together with twenty of the bishops, restored the monastic life to this monastery on September 24, 1978.
  • Likewise, during its session on Wednesday, March 26, 1980, the Holy Synod decided to recognize the Monastery of Anba Pachomius at Hager Edfu, Aswan Governorate.
  • The Holy Synod also recognized the restoration of the monastic life to the Monastery of Mar Girgis at El-Razeikat, and it became one of the official monasteries of our Coptic Church.
  • During the session on Saturday, June 6, 1987, the Holy Synod approved the recognition of the Monastery of the Virgin Mary at Mount Akhmim.

Regarding these monasteries recognized by the Holy Synod, the hierarchs of the Church signed a special document to that effect.

  • The Holy Synod also recognized, during its session on Saturday, June 6, 1987, the sanctity of Saint Sidhom Bishay, the Martyr of Damietta.
  • During the session on Saturday, June 17, 1989, the Holy Synod decided to regard both Jehovah’s Witnesses and Seventh-day Adventists as non-Christians, and not to recognize their translations of the Holy Bible.

It also instructed our people not to attend their meetings, nor to receive them into their homes, as with all other heretics.

  • During the session on Saturday, June 3, 1990, the Holy Synod decided, with regard to the churches of the diaspora that differ from us in the seasons of the year, that the litanies of the waters, the crops, and the airs should be combined. Thus, they are to be prayed together, whether in the prayer of the priest or in the deacon’s response.
