The Remaining Mistakes of Eve
After the transgression, she shared with Adam in fear and in hiding behind the tree.
This meant that she had moved from a life of love to a life of fear, and this was a spiritual decline.
Hiding also carries the meaning of lack of faith, as though God could not see them behind the tree, or it carries the meaning of childishness.
By hiding themselves, she fell into the sin of fleeing from God and not seeking salvation.
It would have been more fitting for her to seek God so that He might grant her forgiveness, purity, and save her, but she fled.
Eve resorted to justifying herself, refusing to confess her sin, seeking excuses, and placing the responsibility on others.
For she placed the blame on the serpent, just as Adam placed the blame on Eve. She never said the words, “I have sinned.”
By using fig leaves, she resorted to concealing the sin rather than treating it.
She did not try to regain her simplicity and innocence; instead, she worked to hide the effects of the sin. Thus, the fig leaves remained a symbol of this.
