A Life of Careful Spiritual Discipline

The sermon discusses the subject of a life of careful spiritual discipline, meaning that a person should be attentive and careful in all his actions, relationships, and dealings with God, with others, and with himself. Carefulness includes thoughts, feelings, senses, speech, time, responsibilities, and daily behavior. Pope Shenouda emphasizes that true carefulness is neither scrupulosity nor legalistic strictness, but a balanced path that avoids negligence on one side and obsessive concern on the other.
Spiritual Message
A careful person watches over himself, examines himself, and exercises self-control, without allowing wrong or vain thoughts to settle within him. He also makes sure that his words are measured, chooses his expressions and tone of voice carefully, and avoids rushing into speech or judging others. Carefulness also means considering the consequences of one’s actions and their effect on oneself and others, and behaving in a manner worthy of being in God’s presence.
Educational Lesson
The sermon teaches us that carefulness appears in simple daily matters, such as respecting time, not wasting other people’s time, maintaining quietness, caring about order, and being faithful in responsibilities. It also appears in church life through entering the church reverently, guarding the senses, standing and praying in an orderly manner, and understanding the words and intention of prayer instead of saying them quickly without understanding. Even making the sign of the cross should be done with respect, faith, and understanding of its meaning.
Practical Application
A person should be very careful in examining himself while being merciful and gentle when dealing with the mistakes of others. He should not justify his mistakes or make excuses for himself, but should faithfully use the abilities God has given him and continually seek to develop them. He should also pay attention to the beginning of sin before it grows, resisting it from its earliest stage and not allowing it to develop and take control of him.
The sermon also explains that a careful person does not take what are called “small sins” lightly, because any sin, however simple it may appear, can have serious spiritual consequences. Therefore, carefulness leads a person to faithfulness and seriousness in his spiritual life, to striving toward perfection, and to refusing negligence or laxity.
