Lecture Summary

The lecture speaks about true practical humility, not merely humility in words or outward appearances. His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that the humble person feels deep inside that he is sinful and unworthy, and therefore treats himself with this thought before God and before people.

The Essence of True Humility

The humble person is not satisfied with saying: “I am a sinner,” but also accepts people’s rebukes and insults without anger or self-defense, because he feels that he deserves even more discipline because of his sins. He also does not rejoice in people’s praise or honor toward him, but feels ashamed of himself and senses unworthiness.

Humility in Prayer and Worship

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that humility appears clearly in the relationship of a person with God. The humble person stands before God with reverence and awe, feeling that he is dust and ashes, and unworthy to speak with God or ask anything from Him. Therefore, his prayer becomes filled with contrition, tears, and the feeling of true repentance.

Humility and Not Seeking Glory or Gifts

The humble person does not seek spiritual gifts or honors, and does not feel that he has reached spiritual perfection, but always sees himself at the beginning of the road. He also does not praise himself or boast about his deeds or knowledge, because he knows that knowledge may lead to pride.

Humility in Church Life

The lecture confirms that the true Orthodox spirit is based on respect, submission, and humility within the Church, and respect for its laws, teachings, fathers, and saints, far from the spirit of pride or condemning others. The humble person judges only himself and is not occupied with the sins of others or condemning the Church and people.

Humility and Learning

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that the humble person always remains a disciple who learns from everyone, even from the simplest people, as happened with the saints who accepted advice and learning from simple persons because of their true humility.

The Spiritual Message of the Lecture

The main message is that humility is not words that are spoken, but a practical life that a person lives daily before God and people. True humility leads to contrition, repentance, and the constant feeling of unworthiness, and makes the person close to God and filled with the spirit of thanksgiving and repentance.
