The Goal in the Spiritual Life

The Main Idea
The lecture explains that a person cannot live a meaningful life without a clear goal, and that the true goal in the spiritual life is not temporal matters or spiritual practices, but God Himself. Everything other than God is a means that leads to Him, not an end in itself.
Distinguishing Between Goal and Means
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III emphasizes that repentance, prayer, fasting, purity, and service are not goals, but means that help a person reach God. Confusing the means with the goal leads to disturbance in spiritual life and loss of inner peace.
The True Goal: God Alone
The highest goal of life is connection with God, loving Him, and abiding in Him. Even eternity and heaven are not goals in themselves, but the goal is life with God. The person who makes God his goal lives in constant joy and unshakable peace.
The Concept of Sufficiency in God
When a person’s heart is filled with the love of God, he does not feel the need for anything else. He reaches the state of “I lack nothing,” because God fills the heart, mind, and entire life.
The Danger of Multiple Goals
A person who sets many goals beside God becomes distracted and tired. But the one who focuses on one goal, which is God, lives steady and happy, not fluctuating according to circumstances.
A Call to Detachment
The lecture stresses the importance of detachment from everything that hinders the relationship with God, including the self and personal desires. Love of the self can be a major obstacle to reaching God.
Examples from the Lives of the Saints
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III presents examples of saints who left everything for God and found complete sufficiency in Him, thus living in joy and peace despite difficult circumstances.
Practical Application
He calls the person to examine his heart: Is God the only goal? And does everything he does lead him to God? He urges moving away from anything that does not lead to God and correcting the spiritual path.
