The Word of God

The Main Idea of the Lecture
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the importance of the Word of God in the life of the believer, affirming that the Holy Bible must be the daily spiritual food of every Christian. He clarified that the Lord Christ Himself used the verses of Scripture in resisting temptations, which shows the power of the Word in confronting the wars of Satan.
The Word of God as Food and Life
His Holiness emphasizes the Lord’s saying: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God,” explaining that distancing oneself from the Holy Bible causes spiritual dryness and weakness in resisting sin. The Word of God is spirit and life; it enlightens the mind and the heart and leads a person in the path of salvation.
The Importance of Memorization and Meditation
His Holiness urges memorizing and meditating on Scripture, because the verse stored in the heart protects a person at the time of temptation. He also calls for organizing competitions to memorize certain chapters of the Bible and encouraging children and youth to connect verses to their daily lives.
Spiritual Preparation to Hear the Word
He explains that hearing the Word of God requires worthiness and purity of heart, referring to how the people prepared in purity and holiness to hear the Ten Commandments. The Church teaches her children to hear the Gospel with the fear of God and reverence, and surrounds the Gospel reading with candles as a symbol of the divine light.
The Bible in Family Life
He stresses that the Holy Bible must have a clear place in every home through daily reading, displaying suitable verses for spiritual teaching, and speaking the Word of God within the family. The Word should be a practical guide in every action.
The Word of God as a Spiritual Weapon
He calls the believer to have a scriptural witness for every action he does, as Saint Anthony said. The Bible is the measure by which behavior is evaluated, the guide in decision-making, and the weapon in confronting spiritual wars.
A Call to Implementation
His Holiness concludes with a practical call: that concern for the Bible should move from mere hearing to application, memorization, and daily use, so that hearts and homes may be filled with the Word of God, and the Bible may become present in thought, heart, and conduct.
