Nowruz
In this lecture His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains the meaning of the Feast of Nayrouz and the remembrance of the martyrs, and presents the martyrs’ position in the Church and the reason for their continuous honoring, also linking the martyrdom of the ancients and their role in preserving and spreading the Christian faith.
Spiritual and educational essence (from a Coptic Orthodox faith perspective)
-
The martyrs loved God and offered their lives; their testimony was the highest degree of love and faith.
-
In martyrdom appears the depth of courage, faith, and steadfastness in faith despite torture and persecution.
-
The Church Fathers and the apostles almost all ended their lives by martyrdom, and the martyrs are the seed and foundation of the faith that reached us intact.
-
The Church prepared the faithful spiritually with books, teaching, liturgies, prayers, and encouragement toward virginity and asceticism so that they could endure persecution.
Examples and stories from the tradition
-
John the Baptist was mentioned and it is clarified that he was a witness and a martyr, and the story of Saint Ignatius of Antioch and the martyrs’ letters that encourage believers was mentioned.
-
Examples were recounted of men, women, monks, and whole groups who sought martyrdom or endured torture with courage.
-
Historical milestones such as the era of Diocletian’s persecution and the Edict of Milan (313 AD) granting religious freedom were mentioned.
Practical and spiritual lessons for believers today
-
The goal is not merely admiration of the martyrs, but to walk in their path: holding fast to faith, loving God above worldly life, and cultivating the virtue of endurance and patience.
-
The martyr’s mentality can exist in the heart without death, meaning the believer lives without attachment to the world and its ornaments.
-
The Church used to care for the families of the martyrs and provide support, and wrote the lives of the martyrs to strengthen the faith of generations.
Conclusion and call to practice virtues
The lecture ends with a practical call: at the start of the new year we must train ourselves in the virtue of endurance, bear insults and pains with patience, and live in the spirit of readiness for spiritual sacrifice as the martyrs taught us.
