The Syriac Church

⬇️ تحميل الفيديو

In this lecture His Holiness Pope Shenouda III presents a historical and spiritual view about the Syrian Church or the Church of Antioch, explaining its apostolic origins and its role in spreading the Christian faith east and west.

Origin of the church and its founders
His Holiness explains that Antioch is one of the oldest churches after Jerusalem, and that Barnabas and the Apostle Paul began work there, and that the Apostle Peter served there and had a prominent role according to old historical sources.

Language and spiritual translation
He clarifies that the Syriac language (Aramaic) is the church’s language and that it has a famous translation of the Holy Scripture (the simple/Besheet translation), and that these translations helped spread the Word into Persian, Arabic, and Hindi.

Ecclesial structure and apostolic authority
He explains how the church’s leadership developed from the city bishopric to the great sees (Rome, Alexandria, and Antioch) and how the title of patriarch and terms like metropolitan and patriarch became signs of the universal church leadership.

Apostolic roles and mission
The Syriac church traced its mission to the work of the apostles, spreading in the East up to India and Persia, and its influence in founding monasteries and theological institutes and caring for the Christian peoples there.

Divisions, persecutions and challenges
His Holiness addresses the divisions that afflicted the church because of political disputes and heresies like Nestorianism and Chalcedonianism, and the persecutions that led to separation and loss of parts of the church, and how the faithful stood firm and preserved the apostolic faith.

Prominent patristic figures
The lecturer mentions great fathers such as Saint Severus and Saint Jacob the Baradeus and others, and presents their role in defending the faith and the spiritual writings they left to serve the church.

The spiritual lesson and the Coptic Orthodox application
The main message the listener takes away is the importance of standing firm in the apostolic faith, preserving the unity of doctrine and the spiritual language that conveys the mystery of salvation, and imitating the church fathers in sacrifice and giving for the service.
