Trials and Tests of the Will

The lecture explains that human life on earth is a continuous period of testing for the will, where God allows trials to reveal the truth of a person’s heart and the extent of their love and obedience to Him. These tests are not to inform God of the person’s condition, but to reveal the person’s truth to himself and to others.
Trials as a Divine Means
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that trials are not a passing event, but a constant divine method to امتحان the human being. Even the Lord Christ was tempted, which confirms that trials are a natural part of spiritual life.
Purpose of the Test
The purpose of the trial is to know:
- Does the person love God more than himself?
- Does he remain steadfast in obedience or fall?
- Does he accept God’s will or cling to his own will?
Types of Tests
God’s tests for الإنسان vary and include:
- Trials and hardships
- Difficult commands
- Things that oppose human desires
- The freedom given to the الإنسان
- Gifts and talents
All these reveal the true nature of the person.
Value of Endurance
According to the endurance of the person in trials, he receives a greater crown. Trials are not punishment but an opportunity for spiritual growth and receiving eternal glory.
Trial as a Mirror
The trial acts as a mirror that reveals what is inside the heart. It shows weakness or strength and pushes the person toward repentance and correction instead of grumbling.
Wisdom in Dealing with Trials
The person is required to:
- Accept trials with thanksgiving or joy
- Examine himself continuously
- Correct his mistakes before it is too late
Call for Self-Examination
The lecture encourages the person to judge himself before being judged, and to use his lifetime as an opportunity for repentance and change, because the test continues until the end of life.
