• Nature of thought: Thought is a mental act that can be holy when filled with God’s love or sinful when directed toward evil. As Scripture says: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your mind.”

• Relation between thought and heart: Thought comes from the heart; a sinful thought is also a heart’s sin, for “the good man brings good things out of the good treasure of his heart.”

• Influence of senses and environment: The senses are doors to thought. What the eyes see and ears hear become thoughts. The environment, friends, and readings also shape the mind.

• Sources of thought: Thought may arise from the heart, the senses, the surrounding environment, or stored memories in the subconscious mind; thus, purity of heart and control of senses are essential.

• Human nature and psychology: Thoughts vary by temperament; the fearful is haunted by fear, the suspicious by doubt. Healing the inner nature helps heal the thoughts.

• Depth and effect of thought: Some thoughts are shallow and fade quickly, others take deep root and can cause emotional or physical troubles if uncontrolled.

• Controlling thoughts: One must not allow any foreign thought to enter the heart; reject it quickly through prayer, the sign of the cross, and Scripture. Evil thoughts must be resisted at their start.

• Sanctifying the mind: Filling the mind with divine love, prayer, and meditation protects it from evil, for a mind occupied with goodness leaves no room for sin.

• Positive aspect: Engaging the mind with prayer, Scripture, and service makes thought holy and constructive, leading the person toward eternal life.

Spiritual Message:
Thought reflects the heart; whatever dwells in the mind also dwells in the soul. Let the mind be pure, centered on Christ and His Word, so that all that flows from it may be holy and life-giving.
