His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the necessity of spiritual caution and discernment in Christian life, especially toward strange teachings and false teachers who come “in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.” He explains that Christian simplicity does not mean naïveté, but rather it must be mixed with wisdom, understanding, and spiritual vigilance.

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III confirms that true love for God makes a person believe the promises and words of God, while in dealing with people, a person should be careful and examining matters, without sick suspicion or foolish simplicity. He also explains that the Church warns against accepting any teaching without accurate spiritual and doctrinal examination.

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III presents many examples of false teachers who use Biblical verses incorrectly or offer ideas that seem comfortable and easy but lead a person away from the sound spiritual path. He also warns against false visions and misleading dreams that Satan may use to deceive people in the form of an angel of light or a righteous person.

He also confirms the importance of spiritual knowledge, reading, studying, and memorizing Biblical verses so that the believer may be able to answer any strange teaching and always be ready to answer everyone who asks about the reason for the hope that is within him.

Spiritual Message

The main message of the lecture is that the Orthodox believer should live in constant spiritual vigilance, combining meekness with wisdom, and love with discernment, so that he may not be deceived by strange teachings or outward appearances that may seem holy while hiding inner deception.

Faith Dimension

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III focuses on the fact that steadfastness in the Orthodox faith requires:

  • Spiritual discernment.
  • Biblical knowledge.
  • Wisdom in dealing.
  • Not being led by every teaching, vision, or outward miracle.
  • Holding firmly to the correct Church teaching.
