His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the commandment of the Lord Christ: “Enter through the narrow gate,” explaining that the true spiritual path is not the path of comfort and desires, but the path of struggle, endurance, and commitment to the commandments. He compares the wide road that appears comfortable but leads to destruction, with the narrow road that appears difficult but leads to eternal life.

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that Satan makes his road wide and easy, justifying lying, deception, and sin, while Christ calls man to truth, honesty, and purity مهما كان الثمن. He also confirms that life with God is based on spiritual principles and values, not on compliments or pleasing the self.

Among the most important meanings of the narrow gate is denying the self, as Christ asks man not to cling to pride or personal rights, but to humble himself and offer himself in love. He also confirms that detachment and not loving money are essential parts of spiritual life, because attachment to material things distances the heart from God.

He also explains that disciplining the body, controlling desires, fasting, vigilance, and prayer are all spiritual means that help a person walk in the narrow path, and that the person who controls his thoughts, tongue, and emotions receives purity of heart and holy life.

He also speaks about the importance of endurance, humility, and accepting rebuke and discipline, because the spiritual person endures for the sake of Christ and does not return evil for evil. He points out that humility and controlling the tongue are among the most important signs of those walking in the true spiritual path.

He presents examples from the lives of the saints, martyrs, and apostles who endured tribulations, temptations, and hardships for the sake of the Kingdom, confirming that true glory comes after struggle and patience, and that the narrow gate leads in the end to joy and eternal glory.

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III stresses that the narrow path may be difficult at its beginning, but it opens before man the abundance of grace and spiritual comfort, while the wide path ends with slavery to sin and inner distress.

At the conclusion of the lecture, he calls believers to steadfastness in the commandments, spiritual struggle, and enduring hardships and temptations with love and joy, because this is the path that leads to the Kingdom and eternal life with God.
