Pope Shenouda III speaks in this lecture about the importance of reconciliation, humility, and quickly ending disputes, as the Lord Christ explained in the Sermon on the Mount saying: “Agree with your adversary quickly while you are with him on the way.” He explains that if a person is at fault, he must initiate reconciliation before matters become complicated and reach courts or deep conflict.

Pope Shenouda III confirms that the spirit of Christianity is based on peace and reconciliation, not stubbornness or revenge. Therefore, the spiritual person prefers solving problems through agreement and love before reaching disputes and courts, as long as this does not conflict with truth and justice.

He also explains that the Church established a spiritual way to solve conflicts that begins with personal reconciliation, then the intervention of the Church for reform, and finally resorting to the courts in extreme necessity, especially if the person is oppressed and there is no other solution.

Pope Shenouda III also discusses the deep spiritual side of the verse, quoting the interpretation of Saint Augustine, who considered that the “adversary” may be the commandments of God that a person breaks through his sins, and these commandments will stand as witnesses against him on the Day of Judgment if he does not repent and return to God.

He also explains that repentance must be quick, because delay causes sin to control the person and turn into a habit and nature that becomes difficult to overcome. Therefore, he warns against continuing in sin or delaying repentance under the excuse that life is still long.

He also confirms that true reconciliation requires humility of heart and sincere confession of wrongdoing, not merely formal words or outward courtesies. The truly repentant person seeks to repair what he has corrupted and asks forgiveness with a broken and loving heart.

Pope Shenouda III speaks about the danger of pride and stubbornness because they prevent a person from apologizing or admitting his mistake, while humility helps him restore peace with God and with people.

At the end of the lecture, he emphasizes that a person should judge himself through repentance and returning to God before standing before the justice of God on the Day of Judgment, and that he should use the opportunity of the present life for reconciliation with God and people before it is too late.
