His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains the meaning of the word “Sacrament” in the Orthodox Church, stating that a sacrament is an invisible divine grace granted to a person through a visible action or means. He then connects this concept to the various Church sacraments, especially Baptism, Chrismation, Repentance, the Eucharist, and the Priesthood.

Spiritual Message

The teaching emphasizes that God’s work in the sacraments is real even though it is invisible. People see the outward rite, but the divine grace given by the Holy Spirit is accomplished in a hidden manner beyond human senses. Therefore, the sacraments are not merely symbolic acts but true means through which God’s grace works in the life of the believer.

Educational Lesson

Pope Shenouda presents the historical development of the priesthood from Adam and the Patriarchs to the Aaronic priesthood, and then to the New Testament priesthood established by Jesus Christ. He explains that Christ is the one and only High Priest who offered Himself as the sacrifice for the world, while the priests of the Church are ministers and stewards of the divine mysteries, exercising their authority by Christ’s commission rather than by personal power. He also explains the different ranks of the priesthood and the roles of the bishop, priest, and deacon within the Church.

Practical Application

This teaching encourages believers to honor the Church’s sacraments and to trust in the effectiveness of God’s invisible grace working through them. It also calls Christians to appreciate the priesthood as a divine institution established for the service of God’s people, and to approach the sacraments with faith, repentance, and obedience, trusting that God remains unchanging in His purposes and His work throughout both the Old and New Testaments.
