Pope Shenouda III speaks about Moses the Prophet and the people of God in the wilderness, explaining that after crossing the Red Sea, the people began their journey through the wilderness under God’s direct leadership.
God was the One who determined their path: they moved when the cloud moved, were illuminated by the pillar of fire, and experienced God’s presence in their midst.
The Tabernacle of Meeting was placed in the center of the people, surrounded by the tents of the priests and Levites and then by the remaining tribes, expressing the presence of God among His people.
God also took care of their needs by giving them manna and quail, guiding them in their journeys, protecting them, and performing many miracles with them.
Moses the Prophet was the mediator between God and the people, conveying revelation, guidance, and commandments to them and interceding for them before God.
The life of the people in the wilderness shows that a person may walk with God outwardly while his heart remains attached to things from the past and to his former desires.

Spiritual Message

The teaching focuses on the danger of complaining and failing to trust God, especially when a person has experienced His goodness and care many times.
The people of Israel complained about water and food, and even after God had performed miracles with them and answered their needs, they neither gave thanks nor apologized for their complaints.
Pope Shenouda explains that complaining had become a sickness of the soul and an old leaven within their hearts, and that it was not always connected to a real reason that required it.
One of the clearest examples was their longing for Egypt, even though Egypt had been the land of their slavery, because their desires for its food and comforts remained attached to it.
At first, God responded to their complaints with patience and mercy, giving them water and food and performing miracles with them, but their continued rebellion and complaining eventually led to punishment.

Educational Lesson

The lecture explains that leaving Egypt was not merely a physical movement from one place to another; it was also meant to be a transformation of the heart and life.
The people left Egypt physically, but at many times they remained attached to Egypt in their feelings, desires, and thoughts.
Therefore, the generation that left Egypt was not prepared to enter the Promised Land, while the new generation that grew up in the wilderness entered it, together with Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh.
The lecture emphasizes that the people did not enter the Promised Land because of their own merit or virtues; rather, God dealt with them according to His plan, and the nations were driven out before them because of those nations’ sins and idolatry.
The lecture also highlights that God’s patience is meant to lead a person to repentance, but refusing repentance and continuing in rebellion can ultimately lead to being deprived of blessing and falling under punishment.

Practical Application

A person should learn to trust God’s leadership even when he does not understand the path or faces difficulties.
He should remember God’s previous acts of goodness instead of focusing only on his present needs and complaining because of them.
He should also examine his heart to see whether he has truly left the slavery of the past or whether he still longs for his former desires.
It is important to learn to give thanks for God’s gifts and not respond to His goodness with forgetfulness or complaining.
The central lesson is that walking with God is not only a matter of the feet, but also of the heart, feelings, and love, and that repentance and responding to God’s guidance are the way to a sound spiritual life.
