The Holy Spirit

Main Idea
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the work of the Holy Spirit in human life, explaining that true spiritual life should be under the guidance, direction, and help of the Holy Spirit. A spiritual person is one who responds to the work of the Holy Spirit and allows Him to lead them, while a person who resists His work or grieves the Holy Spirit does not benefit from the spiritual power God grants. Our relationship with the Holy Spirit begins with baptism, then we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Holy Chrismation, and His work continues in us when we open our hearts to Him.
Spiritual Message
The Pope explains that a person needs to distinguish between thoughts that come from God, thoughts that arise from human nature and desires, and thoughts that come from the influence of others or from the devil. Therefore, a person should submit their thoughts to God’s will and walk uprightly, away from lying, deception, hypocrisy, pretense, and misguided human objectives.
He explains that the Holy Spirit grants a person the spirit of wisdom, understanding, and enlightenment, enabling them to distinguish between truth and falsehood, and between what pleases God and what does not please Him. He also grants the spirit of chastity, holiness, and righteousness. Holiness does not depend on human effort alone, but on God’s work in the heart and the person’s response to that work.
Educational Lesson
The Pope emphasizes that the Holy Spirit grants believers the spirit of power and authority, not only to resist evil, but also to control themselves, their will, feelings, thoughts, and desires. A person who learns self-control through God’s power can resist sin instead of submitting to habits and thoughts that dominate them.
The Pope refers to the Lord Jesus Christ’s promise to His disciples that they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them. He explains that this power appeared in the lives of the disciples, who preached the Gospel boldly, and in the life of Saint Stephen, whose opponents could not resist the wisdom and Spirit by which he spoke. He also refers to the example of David the prophet, explaining that the source of spiritual power is not merely external means, but the presence and work of the Spirit of God within a person.
Practical Application
The Pope calls every person to examine the extent to which they surrender to the work of the Holy Spirit and to ask God for a steadfast and life-giving spirit, and for the spirit of wisdom, holiness, and power. If a person experiences spiritual weakness or loses the ability to resist sin, they should return to God and ask Him to renew the power granted by the Holy Spirit.
The Pope compares spiritual power to a seed that carries the potential for growth within itself but needs suitable conditions for its power to become visible. Likewise, a person may possess spiritual power but fail to use it, or may waste it by moving away from prayer, contemplation, and victory over sins. Therefore, a person should continually renew their relationship with the Holy Spirit in order to regain spiritual strength and walk in a life of holiness and victory.
