The Fear of God Part 2

Main Idea
The lecture revolves around the concept of the fear of God as a foundation of spiritual life. His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that this fear is not negative fear, but a sacred feeling that leads a person to reverence, precision, and spiritual struggle, reaching true love of God.
Fear of God in Worship
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III emphasizes that prayer and standing in church must be with reverence and respect, not مجرد movements or repeated words without understanding. Prayer without focus and contemplation loses its essence and becomes mere recitation without fear of God.
Inner Fear
The fear of God is not limited to outward appearance but extends to thoughts, feelings, and intentions. A person who fears God watches his thoughts before his actions, knowing that God knows everything, even what is in the heart.
Fear Leads to Seriousness and Struggle
True fear pushes a person toward precision in life and striving for perfection and holiness. It is the beginning of the path toward loving God, as true love cannot be reached without passing through fear.
Practical Examples
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III presents spiritual exercises such as: not doing in secret what one is ashamed to do before people, and not thinking thoughts one would be ashamed if revealed. God sees everything, both in public and in secret.
Fear and Repentance
The fear of God acts as a fence that protects from sin, and if a person falls, it quickly leads him to repentance and regret. It is always linked with hope, not despair.
Fear and Humility
A humble person lives in the fear of God because he realizes his weakness and inability to resist sin alone. Therefore, he constantly turns to God in prayer, asking for help.
Fruits of Fear
The fear of God produces many virtues such as wisdom, patience, control of speech, good treatment of others, and avoiding judgment and haste. It also leads a person to examine himself rather than others.
Fear as a Path to Love
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III confirms that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom, and from it one proceeds toward divine love. Love without keeping the commandments is not true love.
