The Differences Between Us and the Protestants and Catholics

The lecture presents a doctrinal overview of the main differences between the Coptic Orthodox Church on one side and the Protestants and Catholics on the other side, with the aim of helping servants and believers understand the most important doctrinal and ecclesiastical points that distinguish the Orthodox faith.
First: Differences with the Protestants
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that Protestants do not recognize the seven Church sacraments as the Orthodox Church believes, and they also do not believe in the priesthood in its traditional ecclesiastical sense.
He also points to differences in rites and worship practices, such as the absence of incense, icons, the Agpeya, and traditional prayers, as well as the absence of commitment to general Church fasts.
He further discusses their rejection of the intercession of saints, angels, and the Virgin Mary, and their non-recognition of the sacrament of confession, absolution, and prayers for the departed.
He mentions their differences regarding certain doctrinal concepts related to baptism and salvation, and their reliance on the principle of faith alone, along with their rejection of Church tradition and the authority of councils and Church Fathers.
He also explains differences regarding monasticism, spiritual fatherhood, and the honoring of saints and the Virgin Mary.
Second: Differences with the Catholics
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that the differences with Catholics are fewer in number compared to the Protestants, but they include important doctrinal and ecclesiastical issues.
Among the most prominent are the issue of the primacy of Saint Peter and the leadership of the Church of Rome over other churches, the doctrine of papal infallibility, and ecclesiastical indulgences.
He also mentions the disagreement regarding the procession of the Holy Spirit, the doctrine of purgatory, and certain beliefs concerning the Virgin Mary.
In addition, he discusses differences related to divorce, the marriage of priests, the timing of granting certain Church sacraments to children, and some liturgical practices concerning Communion and fasting.
Spiritual and Educational Message
The lecture focuses on the importance of every believer and servant knowing the doctrines of his Church and understanding the doctrinal differences among various denominations, while remaining steadfast in the faith and Church tradition as received through the generations. It also emphasizes the importance of studying Church doctrine as an essential part of spiritual education and preserving the Orthodox heritage of faith.
