His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the Agpeya as a complete spiritual school, not merely a book of prayers, explaining its doctrinal and spiritual value in the life of the believer.

⛪ The Spiritual and Doctrinal Dimension of the Agpeya

The Agpeya is the prayers of the canonical hours. It includes seven daytime prayers and the Midnight Prayer, aiming to organize a person’s relationship with God throughout the day. It prolongs the time spent in God’s presence and provides rich spiritual material instead of spiritual dryness or haste.

🕯️ Types of Prayer Taught by the Agpeya

The Agpeya teaches all kinds of prayer:

  • Thanksgiving

  • Repentance, contrition, and confession of sin

  • Supplication

  • Glorification

  • Praise and contemplation of God’s attributes

Thus, it spiritually forms the believer and teaches proper and reverent dialogue with God.

📜 The Agpeya and the Will of God

Praying the Agpeya aligns with God’s will because it is based on the Psalms and Holy Scripture, which are inspired by the Holy Spirit, ensuring that the prayer is upright and acceptable before God.

⏰ Continuous Remembrance of God

The Agpeya organizes the day so that no three hours pass without remembering God, keeping the heart and mind connected to Him throughout day and night, whether at work, on the road, or at rest.

✝️ Remembrance of Salvific Events

The Agpeya connects the believer daily to the events of salvation:

  • The Incarnation in the Morning Prayer

  • The descent of the Holy Spirit at the Third Hour

  • The Crucifixion at the Sixth Hour

  • The Second Coming of Christ in the Midnight Prayer

Thus, it preserves the living spiritual memory.

📚 The Agpeya as a Teaching School

The Agpeya contains spiritual and exhortational lessons from the Epistles, the Gospel, and the Psalms, offering a daily spiritual plan that guides the believer’s conduct and life.

🤍 The Prayer of the One Church

The Agpeya expresses communal prayer in one spirit, as believers everywhere pray the same words, reinforcing the unity of the Church.

🌿 Conclusion

The Agpeya is a school of prayer that teaches a person how to pray, what to pray, and when to pray. It accompanies the believer throughout the day and leads him to a deep and stable spiritual life.
