The Main Idea of the Lecture

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the importance of symbols in understanding the Holy Bible, explaining that many texts cannot be properly understood if they are taken only literally. Rather, their spiritual and symbolic meaning must be perceived. The Bible contains symbolic signs and images that lead the believer to the deeper meaning of spiritual life and God’s work in the salvation of humanity.

The Importance of Symbolic Interpretation

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III emphasizes that many books of the Holy Bible require symbolic interpretation to be understood, such as the Song of Songs, the Book of Revelation, and the sacrifices in the Old Testament. These texts carry deep spiritual meanings that point to divine truths beyond the apparent meaning of the words.

Symbols in the Teachings of Christ

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that the Lord Christ Himself used the symbolic method in His teachings. When He spoke about the living water He meant the Holy Spirit, and when He spoke about the sword He did not mean a material sword but spiritual struggle for the sake of faith. Therefore, understanding these symbols helps the believer grasp the true spiritual message.

Symbols in the Old Testament

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III clarifies that many events in the Old Testament were symbols pointing to greater spiritual realities. The sacrifices were symbols of the sacrifice of Christ, and some persons and events pointed to the acceptance of the Gentiles and to God’s saving work throughout history.

Moderation in Interpretation

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III warns against exaggeration in symbolic interpretation, because some texts should be understood literally. Therefore, it is necessary to distinguish between what should be taken literally and what should be understood symbolically, so that the believer may reach the correct understanding of the Holy Bible without excess or neglect.

The Spiritual Message

The main message is that the Holy Bible carries great spiritual depth, and that the believer needs to understand the symbols within it in order to discover the divine meaning of life and salvation. When a person distinguishes between the literal and symbolic meaning, he can realize the beauty of divine teaching and its spiritual depth.
