The text features a lecture by Pope Shenouda III discussing the topic of “Depression and Melancholy,” distinguishing between three main types:

  • Holy Sorrow (Sacred Melancholy): A spiritual, repentant, and beneficial grief that leads to the reformation of the heart, spiritual growth, and divine consolation. Examples include the weeping of Nehemiah, Ezra, Prophet David, and Jesus Christ’s agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. This type always culminates in joy, hope, and constructive action.
  • Natural Sorrow: A normal, human emotional reaction to losing loved ones or facing hardships, such as Jacob weeping for Joseph, Job grieving for his children, and Mary and Martha weeping for Lazarus.
  • Sinful and Pathological Depression:
    • Sinful Depression: Stems from worldly, material reasons, or the inability to fulfill sinful desires (e.g., King Ahab or Amnon), as well as envy, despair, and a lack of trust in God.
    • Pathological (Psychological) Depression: Arises from obsessive thoughts, constant doubt, exaggeration of situations, and a severe guilt complex (an obsessive sense of wrongdoing). This form of depression can sometimes be a spiritual warfare initiated by demons to discourage the individual and ruin their spiritual life.

Risks of Incorrect Treatment and Spiritual Guidance

  • Dependency on Sedatives: The Pope warns against relying on tranquilizers and sleeping pills (such as Valium) to treat depression without resolving the underlying psychological cause, as they can eventually turn into addictive substances that damage the nervous system.
  • Deficiencies in Psychiatric Clinics: He criticizes facilities that merely sedate patients to avoid spending time listening to them, emphasizing that psychological therapy must be based on conversation and understanding, rather than just medication.
  • Balanced Self-Examination: He advises believers to examine themselves with a precise balance—likening it to a “pharmacist’s scale”—where one should neither falsely justify oneself nor falsely condemn oneself, thereby avoiding the trap of obsessive guilt and pathological despair.
