Main Idea

Pope Shenouda III reflects on the spiritual meaning of the phrase “I am black and beautiful,” explaining that it does not refer to outward appearance, but to things that seem difficult and painful from the human perspective while having a deep spiritual beauty according to God’s purpose.
The narrow way, difficult commandments, trials, sorrows, and the effort endured for God may appear “black,” but they become beautiful because they lead a person to God and to life with Him.
He emphasizes that the person who loves God does not flee from the narrow way, but endures its difficulties, knowing that the way to the resurrection passes through Golgotha and carrying the cross.

Spiritual Message

The teaching shows that what appears painful according to human understanding may be beautiful according to God’s divine purpose; therefore, true beauty lies in the spiritual depth of the trial, while “blackness” represents the human being’s limited view of it.
Pope Shenouda explains that the commandments to love enemies, endure those who offend us, turn the other cheek, and go the second mile appear difficult because they press against human will, self, and dignity, yet they lift a person spiritually.
He also connects self-denial with the Christian life, because when self-centeredness disappears, God becomes manifest in the person, and the death of the old person opens the way for the life of the new person.

Educational Lesson

Baptism provides a clear example of this principle, as it symbolizes dying with Christ and rising with Him—the death of the old person and the beginning of a new life with Christ.
Pope Shenouda also presents examples from the lives of the saints and from the trials described in Scripture to show that detachment, asceticism, and dying to the love of the world and its desires may appear difficult, yet they carry spiritual beauty when they are lived for God.

Practical Application

The practical application is for the believer to learn not to measure spiritual matters by how easy or comfortable the path is, but by their fruits and their relationship with God. When facing a difficult commandment, a trial, or the effort of prayer and spiritual struggle, the believer should look at it with faith and see it as an opportunity for growth and drawing closer to God, rather than a reason to abandon the path. The teaching also emphasizes perseverance in prayer and resisting laziness and comfort, because love for God moves a person to watch and pray even when tired.
