His Holiness Pope Shenouda speaks about the life of Saint Anthony, clarifying that his sanctity is recognized by all Eastern and Western churches and that his status is globally spiritual.

Divine Eminence and the Beginning of a New Path

The Pope indicates that the greatness of the saint is not only in virtues, but that he began a new path in asceticism and solitude not known before; he left wealth and prestige and rose above the level of the world into a life of isolation and prayer.

Solitude, Renunciation, and Trial

The Pope narrated how Anthony lived many years in the mountain in isolation, rarely opening his door to visitors, endured the beasts of the wilderness and his demons, and overcame them by prayer and steadfastness, until he became an example for those who seek an angelic life on earth.

Quick Response and Spiritual Mind

Anthony was quick to respond to Christ’s call; he sold his possessions and left everything immediately. He learned from life and from the ascetics and meekness, and he drew wisdom from life and the spirit; he had spiritual insights and gave people peace simply by looking at his face.

His Influence, Disciples, and Legacy

His repentance and leaving the world produced thousands of disciples and broad spirituality that spread in monasteries and various lands; many monasteries and churches bear his name, and he became a teacher for missionaries and monks, and his life was written so that many were redeemed by it.

Fruits of Sacrifices and Blessings

The Pope affirms that all he left for God was compensated by the Lord with many spiritual treasures: spiritual children by the thousands, many blessings on the places, and a notable spiritual presence in locations associated with him.

Spiritual Conclusion

The life of Saint Anthony calls us to liberation from worldly attachments, to an immediate response to Christ’s call, and to striving in the way of asceticism and prayer, while rejoicing that God rewards those who leave for His sake with abundant spiritual blessing.
