Rest and Weariness

There are basic principles that are set before us in the philosophy of rest and weariness, especially for those who are in the field of responsibility over others:

1- The proper position of care is:

That we become weary so that people may rest, not that we rest while people become weary.

2- That we become weary in body, so that our spirits may rest, or so that our consciences may rest.

3- That we become weary on earth so that we may rest in heaven, as it was said about the children of God who leave the world: “They rest from their labors, and their works follow them” (Rev. 14:13).

4- We do not work for our own rest; rather, God is the One who grants us rest from Himself, according to His saying: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matt. 28:11).

We may regret when we give ourselves rest… but we never regret when God gives us rest.

5- There are many kinds of rest.

It is not only the rest of the body, as everyone asks, but there is also rest of thought, rest of the heart, rest of the soul, and rest of conscience…

6- According to the measure of our weariness, our reward from God will be.

Thus Saint Paul the Apostle said: “Each one will receive his reward according to his labor” (1 Cor. 3:8). Therefore, blessed is he who becomes weary here.

7- Not every weariness has a reward.

For there is vain weariness in vain matters, and holy weariness for the sake of the Lord…..

If our weariness here on earth makes us long for that new world in which there is neither weariness nor pain.
