Poem: We Lost Everything – About Divorce
In this profound poetic reflection, His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about a poem he wrote in 1946, more than sixty years earlier, reflecting on personal and spiritual conditions of that time. The poem was later published in Sunday Schools Magazine in 1947, expressing his steadfast faith in the Gospel despite the loss of worldly things.
He wrote:
“We lost everything; nothing remains to us but the Gospel of Jesus. It remains with us, it remains as long as we remain, and it remains after us.”
🕊 Main Idea:
The core idea is that true faith is not shaken by the loss of temporal things, for the eternal treasure is the Word of God. All things in the world will pass away, but the Gospel endures forever.
🌿 Spiritual Dimension:
Through his words, the Pope shows that clinging to the Gospel is the secret of spiritual life and victory over death. Real death, he says, is not physical but spiritual—the abandonment of the Gospel: “For death is the neglect of our Gospel.”
💧 Educational Message:
The message calls every believer to make the Gospel the center of their life and to feed upon its words, for every letter is more precious than life itself. The Pope reminds us of Christ’s promise: “The gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” To remain in the Gospel is to remain in true life.
