Meditations on Heaven

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks in this sermon about meditation on Heaven as one of the most important spiritual exercises that lift the human mind from earthly to heavenly matters, leading to a holy life oriented toward God and His Kingdom.
1. The Meaning of Heaven and Meditation on It
He explains that Heaven is not only a place but a state of purity and holiness where God and His angels dwell. Whoever contemplates Heaven lifts his thoughts from the material world and lives with a heart attached to what is above, not to what is on earth.
2. Heaven as the Throne of God’s Glory
The phrase “Heaven is God’s throne” means His glory and power. God’s will is perfectly obeyed there, unlike on earth where His glory is often ignored. That’s why we pray, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven,” desiring the earth to mirror Heaven in obedience and holiness.
3. Living in Readiness for Heaven
The Pope stresses that life on earth is temporary, while Heaven is eternal. Therefore, one must prepare through purity and victory over sin, for “only the pure shall enter Heaven.”
4. The Heavenly Glory
He describes Heaven as a place of everlasting joy and divine fellowship where there is no evil or darkness, for God Himself is its light. Souls are crowned with righteousness and live in unending holiness.
5. The Joy of Meeting the Saints and Spiritual Knowledge
He speaks of the great joy in knowing the saints and prophets in Heaven—the “great heavenly reunion” where the righteous live forever with God, the angels, and all His saints.
6. The Call to Seek the Heavenly Life
The sermon concludes with a call to detach from earthly desires, for people are lost when their minds are not fixed on Heaven. Those who live with heavenly hearts begin even now to taste eternal life.
