Many Were Lost Inside the Church

Main idea
This lecture warns of the danger of spiritual loss even for those inside the church and involved in ministry. The speaker presents historical examples of men who served and then were lost or fell into heresy or pride, to show that outward belonging to the church does not guarantee salvation.
Examples and warnings
Dimas and Saul and fathers described as being at the height of service then fell are mentioned. He also points out that some scribes and Pharisees who were close to the people were accused of spiritual blindness because they neither entered themselves nor allowed others to enter.
Reasons for being lost inside the church
Being confined to knowledge alone without spiritual life, pride and self-esteem when promoted in service, wrong teaching or spreading personal thought as doctrine, a spirit of domination and competitions within ministry, and loss of reverence and humility.
Effect of impure service
A servant who forgets his own salvation and is preoccupied with general reform or the authority of service may lose his soul. One who enters the ministry to uproot tares harshly and angrily departs from the spirit of love, wrongs others, and becomes closer to the tares he opposes.
Practical and spiritual recommendation
The most important thing first and last is that each one work for his own salvation, purify his heart and seek humility and reverence; if he cares for his salvation he will become an example and trusted to guide others without aiming for that by domineering ways.
Spiritual summary from a Coptic Orthodox faith perspective
Outward belonging to the church and service does not substitute for an inner life with God; salvation requires continuous repentance, humility, and fear of God. The church is a school for salvation, but caution is required: abundant service or spiritual ranks may lead to pride and heresies if not accompanied by a true spiritual life.
