Question
I love the spiritual life. And whenever I climb one step, I go back again and increase. I work in a company, and all my colleagues like joking around and inappropriate talk. If I do not join them, they say, “I am dull and not accepted among them.” And if I join them, my conscience troubles me, and I do not pray at all that day. So why should I work with them?
Answer
Do not join them in such joking. But be kind to them in your other dealings. Do not be strict, withdrawn, or frown-faced, whether in situations involving jokes or otherwise. Rather, be kind, helpful, smiling, and cheerful. Only when there is inappropriate joking, do not participate.
They will not see you as dull, because outside the times of such joking, you are kind and loving toward them… and they will become accustomed to your character.
