Indulgences – Saints’ Remains – The Purifier
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that the concept of “indulgences” as found in Catholicism—granting forgiveness for a number of days or years through prayers or visits—is contrary to Orthodox belief. Forgiveness is only received through sincere repentance, as Christ said: “Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” Forgiveness is not mechanical or counted but a heartfelt relationship with God based on faith and love.
Rejection of the Purgatory Idea
His Holiness rejects the idea of “purgatory,” where souls are said to suffer after death to atone for sins even after being forgiven. He affirms that this contradicts the doctrine of redemption, because through His death and precious blood, Christ has fully atoned for our sins. If we must pay again, then what is the purpose of His redemption?
The Sufficiency of Christ’s Blood
The blood of Christ alone purifies us from every sin, as written: “The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). Therefore, there is no need for a purgatory or punishment after death, for salvation is the fruit of faith in Christ and true repentance.
The Theological Invalidity of Purgatory
The Pope states that purgatory nullifies the value of repentance and absolution, weakens trust in God’s mercy, and unfairly punishes the soul alone while the body that sinned remains in the dust. Divine justice does not separate body and soul in reward or punishment, for both share in sin and salvation together.
Spiritual Conclusion
Salvation is not earned by human effort or suffering but is the gift of divine grace, received through repentance and faith in the blood of Christ. Eternal peace and rest come not from purgatory or temporal measures but from union with Christ, who alone grants complete forgiveness.
