Introduction and brief biography
His Holiness Pope Shenouda addresses the life and historical dates of Saint John Chrysostom, mentioning his birth in Antioch in 344 and the main stages of his life: study under philosophers and teachers, influence by his friend Saint Basil the Great, his withdrawal and monasticism, then returning to priestly service. He mentions the years of baptism and ordinations and the dates of the patriarchate, exile and his end in the year 407.

His teaching and preaching work
He explains that John was a learned man of eloquent speech, nicknamed “Chrysostom” for his eloquence in preaching, and an author of books such as “On the Priesthood” and a series of New Testament commentaries. His style mixes exposition with spiritual homily and focuses on applying the texts to the lives of believers.

Spirituality and asceticism
His asceticism, prayer and seclusion in a cave are clear, and how that affected his health. With personal humility and asceticism, he lived simply, fasting and practicing austerity, often enduring illness and limiting his comforts.

Community service and social work
He had deep love for the poor: he cared for the needy, sold patriarchal furniture to give its value to the poor, established charitable institutions and hospitals, supported shelters, and supervised clergy who indulged in wealth.

Boldness in rebuke
John did not hesitate to rebuke wrongdoing regardless of rank; he rebuked the queen for her actions, her excessive display and her injustice toward widows, which provoked conspiracies against him and led to two exiles. His criticism sprang from spiritual and moral concern to purify church and civic life.

Educational and theological legacy
Despite his death in exile and a relatively short active period as patriarch (six effective years), he left treasures in teachings, exegesis and Orthodox theology, especially in Gospel interpretation and practical Christian preaching.

Core spiritual message
Love for the poor, humility before God and people, and honesty in preaching and correction — this is the essence of Saint John’s message as presented by the speaker, noting that his works and teachings continue to enrich the Orthodox Church.
