I Am in Them and They Are in Me

The lecture of His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the depth of the spiritual relationship between الإنسان and God, as declared by the Lord Christ in His saying: “I am in them and they are in Me that they may be perfected into one.” It explains that true Christian life is not merely outward practices, but rather a life of fellowship and permanent abiding in Christ.
Abiding in Christ
His Holiness compares the believer to a branch abiding in the vine, receiving its life and strength from Christ. Every spiritual fruit appearing in the life of الإنسان is the work of God’s grace within him, not the result of his own personal power. Whoever separates himself from God loses true spiritual life.
Christ Lives in the Human Being
The teaching focuses on the apostle’s saying: “Not I, but Christ lives in me,” explaining that the spiritual person surrenders his will and entire self completely to Christ, until his thoughts, feelings, and actions become subject to God’s guidance.
The Life of Fellowship with God
Life with God is a relationship of love and continuous fellowship, in which Christ dwells in the heart and leads الإنسان in every detail of his life. Prayer, fasting, and worship are not formal rituals, but a living expression of God dwelling within الإنسان.
Union with Christ
His Holiness reflects on the meaning of the Scripture saying: “You have put on Christ,” explaining that Christ is not merely an idea or intellectual knowledge, but the entire life of the believer. The true person is the one in whom Christ appears through his words, actions, and the love of God working within him.
Surrendering the Will to God’s Will
The lecture emphasizes the necessity of harmony between the human will and the will of God, because inner conflict begins when الإنسان clings to his personal will away from God. Holy life means that the Lord’s will becomes the leader of everything.
The Church as the Body of Christ
His Holiness also explains that the Church is the Body of Christ, and Christ is the Head who leads all the members. If Christ is truly the Head of الإنسان, then He directs all his thoughts, actions, and entire life.
Eternal Life with Christ
The lecture concludes by affirming that the relationship with Christ begins on earth and continues forever, where the believer remains with the Lord at all times and enjoys complete fellowship with Him in the Kingdom.
