His Holiness Pope Shenouda III discusses the importance of humility in Christian service, affirming that service is not a means for elevation or boasting but a calling to serve and sacrifice as Christ did. He notes that the title “servant” carries spiritual dignity and must remain a guide for the servant’s conduct regardless of promotion in ranks.

Spiritual dimension and Coptic Orthodox teaching

Humility is considered a central virtue in Orthodox spiritual life; the model is placed in the life of Christ who came to serve and humbled Himself in apostolic ministry through work and humility. The calling is not only for those in offices but for all believers to remain lifelong disciples who learn and stay humble.

Practical advice to preserve humility in service

  • Preserve the spirit of discipleship and continue learning from the fathers and spiritual books.
  • Avoid loud disputes and destructive criticism; speak gently and respectfully.
  • Serve in humble places (villages and simple neighborhoods) to keep your simplicity and not seek positions for reputation.
  • Make your work sincere for God: do not seek control or domination and do not turn servants into your followers.
  • Do not shout or raise your voice; adopt Christ’s calmness and obedience as a model.
  • Do good in secret and attribute success to God and others, and do not seek positions or titles.

Effects of losing humility

Losing humility leads to pride, controlling others, divisions, slander, and psychological strain among servants. A servant who loses humility loses his blessings and moves away from the spiritual purpose of service.

Final exhortation

Be faithful in little, strive for people’s growth according to their nature, and seek to remain simple and humble as the Lord taught us. Humility in service reflects Christ’s love and bears true spiritual fruit.
