Main Idea

In this spiritual teaching, Pope Shenouda III discusses the gift of giving, explaining that God grants different gifts to each person, and everyone should discover the gifts God has given them and use them for the glory of His name. He emphasizes that giving is not limited to money and material possessions, but also includes love, affection, time, knowledge, effort, and service. He explains that giving generously is a spiritual way of life that reflects a person’s love for others and demonstrates the extent to which that person is free from excessive attachment to money and worldly possessions.

Spiritual Message

The teaching explains that God is generous in His giving, granting His blessings to people abundantly and giving them even without their asking because He knows their needs. The Lord Jesus Christ provides the greatest example of giving, as He granted humanity His pure teaching, healing, and blessings, and offered Himself for the salvation of the world. Therefore, God calls us to give generously and joyfully, not with grumbling or regret, and to offer Him our entire hearts with sincere love and genuine dedication. The teaching also emphasizes that giving is not merely an outward action, but an expression of love, compassion, and a willingness to sacrifice oneself for others.

Educational Lesson

The teaching draws on examples from the Bible and the lives of the saints, such as the widow of Zarephath, who offered what she possessed to the prophet Elijah, the saints who sacrificed their possessions to help those in need, and Anba Abraam, Bishop of Fayoum, who gave generously to the poor, even from what he personally needed. These examples show that the value of giving is not measured by the amount a person offers, but by the spirit of love and generosity that motivates the giving. The teaching also explains that generosity should include knowledge, education, and experience, so a person should not keep what they have learned to themselves, but should help others learn and benefit. It also emphasizes that the gift of giving comes from God, and therefore a person should use it with humility and faithfulness, without boasting about what they offer.

Practical Application

This teaching calls us to examine ourselves and ask: Do we give generously and joyfully? Do we offer God our time, hearts, and efforts as we offer them to others? We should dedicate sufficient time to prayer, worship, contemplation, and service, and help those in need with love, without excessive scrutiny or grumbling. We can also practice giving by sharing knowledge, books, and experiences with those who need them, and by treating others with kindness, a smile, and a good word. The goal is for giving to become a way of life that flows from a loving heart, so that we offer what we have joyfully and use our gifts to serve others and glorify the name of God.
